TAIWAN ISSUES in ACTION (TIiA)
Introductory Statement
OVERALL AIM OF TAIWAN ISSUES IN ACTION GROUP:
to enable Taiwanese people to more effectively and confidently communicate in English about Taiwan.

A TYPICAL PARTICIPANT:
--has an intermediate level of English or above;
--wants to maintain and/or improve their English through the sessions
--is interested in both learning about local Taiwan issues and communicating about them in English to others (NB: Some issues are more "stand-alone" Taiwan issues; others combine an international perspective with our local circumstances.)
--is willing and interested to not only talk, but also take some action, even if it's a small step
--is interested in the concept of financially supporting local organisations with some of their own money

ACTIONS TAKEN SO FAR:
--Shark Fin Soup:
a) Feb 2010: Signed EAST petition sent to convenience stores urging them to not sell shark fin soup products during Chinese New Year; Lynn passed petition around her workplace and got 40 signatures--members helped her send it to 7-11
b) Jan 2011: Sent email to BBC One Planet program updating them re: Taiwanese attitudes towards shark fin soup
--Migrant Laborers in Taiwan:
Jan 2010: wrote an email to the Taiwan International Laborers' Assn about foreign caregivers in Taiwan, in support of that NGO's work in advocating for better and fair treatment of local migrant laborers
--Book Translation/Launch:
Nov-Dec 2010: Some members helped fellow member JiaLi translate her book Travels with the Ukelele into English, and attended her book launch. Proceeds from the book are going to support JiaLi's NGO in Cambodia.
--Overtime Work:
May-June 2011: Wrote a Letter to the Editor in Chinese and English entitled Overtime and Overweight and sent it to The Taipei Times, The Liberty Times and The China Times newspapers
--Monkey:
May 2011: Emailed EAST about a chained monkey at a Hualian cafe
--Talk to Teens about Jobs:
13 June 2010: 6 of us went to one of Lynn's British Council Teens English class to talk to them about our work, and answer their questions about career options.

MONEY MATTERS:
--I (Lynn Conant), and any other future interested native speakers volunteer to facilitate the group.
--the participants make a donation (any amount they choose) each session to cover:
a) fixed costs such as room hire, plus
b) a regular donation to local causes
--any surplus to be donated to causes the group chooses together.

社團發起緣由:
此社團由一位從事英語教學工作多年的成人英語老師― Lynn Conant*所發起,由於Lynn已經來台多年,並且深愛這塊充滿人情趣味的寶島,因此她發起了這個用英文認識台灣的社團,並且免費義務指導想要把英文練得更好且有心藉此活動好好認識台灣的台灣人成為社團的一員。只要每月撥空四小時,讓Lynn指導你的英文技巧,也讓身為台灣人的你告訴Lynn更多關於台灣的大小事。
社團宗旨:
--讓身長在台灣的你我可以更有效且更有自信地用英文介紹了解台灣

社團成員的基本條件:
--擁有中階水準以上英語聽說讀寫能力者 (IELTS成績6分以上)
--希望可以維持或者精進自己的英語能力者
--對於可以同時學習以英文了解台灣相關的現代課題以及向他人用英文介紹台灣者(討論範圍包含台灣特有議題,以及結合台灣現況的國際議題)
--願意而且有興趣將關心台灣的行為不只表現在口語更能夠化為行動者,即使只是一小步
--有興趣了解台灣本土各領域的慈善團體,並於認同部分機構的宗旨與相關活動後,願意捐款該些機構者社團慈善團體

--魚翅販售:
a)Feb 2010: 參與 EAST 發起的要求四大超商停止販售魚翅年菜的請願書簽署活動: Lynn 在工作場所散發請願書後,獲得40個簽名的迴響,最後由幾位成員幫忙把請願書交給7-11
b) Jan 2011: 寄出一封電子郵件給 BBC 曾製作的專題節目 One Planet program,表達一部分台灣人看待魚翅的態度
--台灣移工:
Jan 2010: 寄出一封電子郵件給台灣國際勞工協會(Taiwan International Laborers' Assn) ,表達支持該協會致力於為在台的外籍看護爭取更好更公平的待遇
--書籍翻譯/發表:
Nov-Dec 2010: 社團部分成員協助另一位成員 JiaLi,將其中文繪本著作翻譯成英文Travels with the Ukelele, 並且出席了該書發表會。該書販售所得款項將捐贈給JiaLi服務於柬埔寨的非營利組織

May-June 2011: 寄出主旨為 Overtime and Overweight 的中英雙語信函給台北時報(Taipei Times) 、自由時報(The Liberty Times)以及中時電子報(The China Times newspapers) 等3家新聞媒體
--獼猴保育:
May 2011: 寄出一封電子郵件給EAST, 請求該協會協助了解在花蓮一家餐廳遭鍊鎖的台灣獼猴的狀況
--與青少年討論職場工作:
13 June 20106: 讀會會6位成員前往Lynn任教於英國文化協會(British Council)的青少年英語課程班,透過問答討論的方式,使班上青少年了解該些成員現任工作,提供班上青少年未來職場選擇的參考
