25 Aug 2012 Session Minutes

TAIWAN ISSUES in ACTION MINUTES by Christine
Saturday 25 August 2012 Attendees: Lynn, Yvonne, Christine
Venue: Christine's house
Time: 13:30-18:00
Apologies: Rosie, Hal, Phil, Louis, Joyce, Caroline, Bi-Shia
Icebreaker: Lynn – Share 3 important changes in your life/behavior/hobby/routines and why you made the decision to change.
Yvonne
(1)   Did a somersault, rode a roller coaster, entered Japanese speech contest...motivation: to
take a risk.
(2)   Decided to study overseas: job wasn't busy; felt need for a change; friend took IELTS exam
sso she did too; found out about scholarship, applied and got it!
(3)   Resigned from job– had thought about it for a long time; was influenced by a friend
Lynn
(1)   Decided to re-start doing the Alexander Technique – she'd recommended it to a colleague, so felt she needed to do it herself
(2)   In the late '70s, vowed never to own a car: 1979 environmental movement, oil crisis
(3) Stopped playing the cello: wasn't making enough progress; it wasn't enjoyable any more
Christine
(1)   Decided to join a gym: to develop the habit of regular exercise
(2)   Decided to slow life tempo down, adjust priorities, less activities, go to bed earlier, get up earlier
(3)   Agreed to participate in Commonwealth magazine's year-long customer survey
It's interesting to find out people's motivation to change. Does it usually come from inside onself, or from other people influencing us/pushing us?

Session Topic: Experience a Group Problem—Solving Activity: Design for Change+TIiA (Part 2)

Design for Change framework:
Step 1 Feel
Step 2 Imagine
Step 3 Do
Step 4 Share
Lynn stated her current feeling about TIiA: We focus on Taiwan issues, but not so much on actions. No actions taken this year!
She asked Yvonne and Christine:
How can TIiA be more active, motivate and inspire people?
Yvonne suggested we go out on day trips sometimes...Christine said Lynn could directly ask members to host sessions. She thinks the session topics have been fine. Regarding membership, we need to recruit more members so there's a larger base of people who can possibly attend sessions. Decisions made:
1.     TIiA will go out on an outing 1x per season, ie 4 x a year
2.     Lynn to remind members they can give ideas for Session Topics, eg from:
bilingual magazines—台灣光華雜誌Taiwan Panorama -- http://www.taiwanpanorama.com.tw/en/index.php
Commonwealth—天下雜誌http://www.cw.com.tw/
3.     Lynn to make more copies of our promotional flyer—will bring to sessions and ask members to hand them out

Announcements: Next Session: Trip to Fulong to check out lunchbox shop's plastic bag situation...to celebrate and possibly take action about World Clean Up Day! (16 Sept 2012)
Donations collected: 200 NT.
Expenses: 0 NT
As of the end of this session, TIiA's balance is now 8490 NT.
