15 Dec 2012 Session Minutes

Date: Sat 15 Dec 2012
Topic: Where to Donate our 10,000NT?
Place: Christine's Place
Time: 13:30-16:30

Attending: Christine, Yvonne, Lynn, Elizabeth

Elizabeth, Lynn and Christine presented proposals for where to donate our 10,000NT.

Elizabeth is active with the Alliance for Urban Renewal, a 100% volunteer group in Taipei which focuses on grassroots community action on the topic of urban development projects. It is especially active in the Wang Family house issue in Shilin. It is concerned that the current laws about urban renewal favor construction companies over the interests of individual citizens, and that they contribute to the erosion of community spirit.

Lynn passed on a suggestion from Hal about donating to the Blind Dog Foundation, and also about how Design for Change in Taiwan might spend a donation.

Christine told us about her experience applying to become a volunteer book reader for the blind, and suggested donating money to an organisation about that.

We decided to postpone our vote until the next session, Sat 29 Dec, since we heard more people were able to attend that session.

Final Session!? Sat 29 Dec 2012 Vote about our Donation/Happy New Year!

Hello Good People

Since there were only 4 of us at the last Session on 16 Dec, we decided to postpone the vote regarding where to spend our 10,000 NT donation. Hope you can come on the 29th of Dec! It might not only be the last session of 2012, but also ever...I'm moving to 金門 on 15 Jan 2013! So please come so I can see you before I leave Taipei...

:) Lynn

Please note that the venue depends on the weather!

Date:  Sat 29 Dec 2012
Time: 13:30-16:30
Topic: Vote on where to Donate our 10,000NT / Happy New Year!
Place:
Nice Weather Option
If the weather isn't too cold or wet: Dihua St. Meet at Xiahai City God Temple (霞海城隍廟) and
then after a quick prayer if you want (!), proceed to a cafe to enjoy the atmosphere.
Cold/Wet Weather Option
Christine's place, a 3-min walk from 六張 MRT station (Thanks, Christine!)

If you're not sure where we're meeting, just call me (Lynn) on 0931-146-481. I'll turn my phone on Sat at 12 noon.

For planning purposes, PLEASE REGISTER for this session by FRIDAY 28 Dec, 12 noon
by replying to this email. If you
Thanks, hope to see you there! :)

Optional Preparation
Read through these proposals for our donation:

1. Alliance for Urban Renewal Group

On printing out the in-house magazine, which costs NT 70 to print one issue. The Alliance estimates that in order to get the messages about urban renewal issues across effectively, they’d like to make 2,000 copies for the next issue.
Apart from that, they’d like to hire an assitance at the rate of NT 8,000 (same as a graduate student) to handle all the administrative issues (which is handled by each and every one of us at our spare time outside our work, school, and work for the Alliance).

2. Design for Change
We plan to spend the money on the transportation for interviewing children and collecting stories. After the interview, we will publish the stories collected, like the I CAN BOOK. We do not have a budget for it at the moment for we used to pay the fee on our own.... So that would be a great relief to us if we get the fund from TIiA.

3. From Hal:
I propose donate to 台灣導盲犬協會(http://www.guidedog.org.tw/)and 財團法人惠光導盲犬教育基金會(http://www.guidedog.tw/)

I am not sure if it's a NPO, but the 1st one is a registed social organization, and the 2nd one is a foundation.

4. From Christine:
An NGO that trains volunteers to read books for the blind. The money would go towards paying some trainers of volunteers.

14-16 Dec FREE Film Festival!

Hello Good People!

Are you free this coming Fri night, Sat or Sun? (14-16 Dec 2012) You might be interested in this FREE film festival. It looks great! Anita's sent us this information:

I'm attaching the file of movie schedule about PTS Best of Input 2012. I learned about it since last year and I found their experimental movies and documentaries from different countries were very neat. They even have the director sessions to face the audience and talk about them. It's a good chance to watch free great movies in Taiwan mainland! My friends and I will hang around there from Friday night and Sat, Sun for the goodies. It takes time to line up so if you wanna come, you can call me to see if we could save seats for you or/and your husband, FYI. I'm not sure if they have the English subtitle but I'll make sure about it later. Last year I did see many foreigners sitting in... (OR maybe some movies are in English OR were they good at reading Chinese?)

Here's the site about the movie introduction..

The Danger of a Single Story: 27 Oct 2012 Session Minutes

Session Minutes by Rosie
Date: Sat 27 Oct 2012
Place: Fujin St No. 3 Park, Taipei City (富錦街三號公園)
Attendees: Lynn, Caroline, Christine, Anita, Rosie

Session 1: Icebreaking
Icebreaker: Lynn
Everyone recommended their favorite restaurant!

Session 2:The Topic- The Danger of a Single Story
Lynn led us in a discussion about stereotyping, relating it to Nigerian writer Chimamanda Adichie's interesting TED Talk and the recent (22 Sept 2012) editorial in the Taipei Times. We talked about stereotyping within Taiwan, and about Taiwan outside of Taiwan. We shared experiences of being the victim of “single stories” with each other.

--Rosie said:
People who live in Taipei City all dress in the latest fashions, don’t they?
I was born in and live in Taipei City. Most of my relatives live in the middle part of Taiwan. They have the impression that Taipei people are really into fashion, that we dress up and wear make up every day. When I see my relatives at Chinese New Year, they expect to see a very “fashionable” Rosie. Actually I am not that type of person. I like to dress casual and don’t spend too much money on clothes. But I want to meet their expectations, so I try my best to dress up. Therefore, going back to my father’s hometown is a bit stressful for me.

--Caroline said:
People who live in the most expensive areas in Taipei City always look down on other people and are too proud of themselves, aren’t they?
When people find out I live near Daan Park, they're surprised to hear I know how to do housework!

--Lynn said:
Foreigners always need help, don’t they?
I've been living in Taipei city for a long time (over 8 years). I like to be treated equally and be thought of as a human being rather than only a foreigner. For example, sometimes when I'm looking at a map in the MRT, some strangers come up to me and ask, “Do you need help?” Actually, I know Taipei pretty well, and don't often need help. I was really glad recently when a Taiwanese person asked ME to help him in the MRT! I was able to tell him how to get from 後山埤 to 中山國小 MRT stations. He normally drives a scooter, so wasn't sure...
Are American people always rude?
When I lived in NZ, I often heard NZ people say in a surprised voice after returning from a trip to the US, “All the Americans I met were so polite!” They obviously had an image of most Americans being rude—perhaps from TV?

--Anita said:
People who live in south of Taiwan are friendlier, and Taipeis are more practical. Is that true?
Japanese people can’t speak English very well, can they?

Small conclusion:
We come from different backgrounds. We do our best to realize why people have single stories about other people and places. We are better being more open minded.

Action:
We are going to write a comment on TED.

P.S. If you're not sure of an NGO you like, you could try this website: www.poweroflove.com.tw. It lists (in Chinese) lots of Taiwanese NGOs which have confirmed they would like to accept donations (not all actually want or need money!), and have specific projects that our money would support...

27 Oct 2012 World Heritage Site for Taiwan? Session Minutes:

Dear all,

It was a lovely fine day with a bit sunshine, very good for a picnic.

The only regret was that no one could take the beautiful sunshine because everyone was fully occupied by some unexpected coming event or task.

The session topic was World Heritage Site for Taiwan: What would you vote for? Through E-remote voting, we have one vote for Kinmen Battlefield Culture (from Lynn) and one for Penghu Columnar Basalt Nature Reserve (from me).

And our next exciting news for the next session on Dec.8 is that we're going to discuss our $10,000 donation for one right NGO. Don't forget!

Anita Yang
P.S. There will be no session on Sat 24 Nov...

22 Sept 2012 Being Green--Fighting Global Warming Session Minutes

TIiA 22 Sept 2012 Session Minutes by Christine

AttendeesLynn, Hal, Christine
Venue: Christine's place
Time: 13:30-17:00
HostLynn

Session TopicBeing Green—Fighting Global Warming

Interesting points:

1.     Results of survey at FuLong train station on Sep.08, 2012, from about 10 group of visitors whom we interviewed with the question: How do you feel about restaurants in Fulong offering clean re-used plastic bags for take-out lunch boxes?
      There were 2 main answers:

(1) plastic bag not needed for lunch box (2) refused 2nd hand plastic bags--said this would be unhygienic.

Lynn’s thoughts after observing the Fulong lunchbox shop and its customers on Sept 8, 2012:
Fulong lunchboxes are special in that they aren't so oily. The box stays clean, so the plastic bags people get also stay clean.  Therefore, she feels they could be reused. But she understands Taiwanese people’s initial reaction that plastic bags given out with lunchboxes couldn’t be re-used. She had the same feeling the first time she ate a Fulong lunchbox too! But then she discovered the plastic bag actually stayed very clean...

Christine’s thoughts:  As Fulong is a tourist spot, tourists take lunchboxes out, leave the shop, and then don't return to the shop.  Perhaps some people reuse the plastic bag by themselves, maybe treat it as garbage bag during their tour.

Hal’s thoughts: Maybe we can suggest the shops prepare alternative material bags instead of plastic bags, which are more environmentally friendly.

2.     How to promote the idea of reducing plastic bags in Fulong?
Hal will draft a letter for suggestion to related Dept. of Government, eg 台灣好行

3.     Tips for Fighting Global Warming: Oct.5 Lynn went  to a jr. high school to do a Fight Global Warming: Go Green! lesson. We shared tips about saving energy in daily life that Lynn could suggest to the students.

25 Aug 2012 Session Minutes

TAIWAN ISSUES in ACTION MINUTES by Christine
Saturday 25 August 2012 Attendees: Lynn, Yvonne, Christine
Venue: Christine's house
Time: 13:30-18:00
Apologies: Rosie, Hal, Phil, Louis, Joyce, Caroline, Bi-Shia
Icebreaker: Lynn – Share 3 important changes in your life/behavior/hobby/routines and why you made the decision to change.
Yvonne
(1)   Did a somersault, rode a roller coaster, entered Japanese speech contest...motivation: to
take a risk.
(2)   Decided to study overseas: job wasn't busy; felt need for a change; friend took IELTS exam
sso she did too; found out about scholarship, applied and got it!
(3)   Resigned from job– had thought about it for a long time; was influenced by a friend
Lynn
(1)   Decided to re-start doing the Alexander Technique – she'd recommended it to a colleague, so felt she needed to do it herself
(2)   In the late '70s, vowed never to own a car: 1979 environmental movement, oil crisis
(3) Stopped playing the cello: wasn't making enough progress; it wasn't enjoyable any more
Christine
(1)   Decided to join a gym: to develop the habit of regular exercise
(2)   Decided to slow life tempo down, adjust priorities, less activities, go to bed earlier, get up earlier
(3)   Agreed to participate in Commonwealth magazine's year-long customer survey
It's interesting to find out people's motivation to change. Does it usually come from inside onself, or from other people influencing us/pushing us?

Session Topic: Experience a Group Problem—Solving Activity: Design for Change+TIiA (Part 2)

Design for Change framework:
Step 1 Feel
Step 2 Imagine
Step 3 Do
Step 4 Share
Lynn stated her current feeling about TIiA: We focus on Taiwan issues, but not so much on actions. No actions taken this year!
She asked Yvonne and Christine:
How can TIiA be more active, motivate and inspire people?
Yvonne suggested we go out on day trips sometimes...Christine said Lynn could directly ask members to host sessions. She thinks the session topics have been fine. Regarding membership, we need to recruit more members so there's a larger base of people who can possibly attend sessions. Decisions made:
1.     TIiA will go out on an outing 1x per season, ie 4 x a year
2.     Lynn to remind members they can give ideas for Session Topics, eg from:
bilingual magazines—台灣光華雜誌Taiwan Panorama -- http://www.taiwanpanorama.com.tw/en/index.php
Commonwealth—天下雜誌http://www.cw.com.tw/
3.     Lynn to make more copies of our promotional flyer—will bring to sessions and ask members to hand them out

Announcements: Next Session: Trip to Fulong to check out lunchbox shop's plastic bag situation...to celebrate and possibly take action about World Clean Up Day! (16 Sept 2012)
Donations collected: 200 NT.
Expenses: 0 NT
As of the end of this session, TIiA's balance is now 8490 NT.

30 June 2012 Session Minutes

TIiA Session Minutes by Rosie
Date: Sat 30 June 2012
Place: Design for Change office, Taipei (between Zhongxiao Fuxing and Daan MRT stations)
Attendees: Lynn, Liang, Jasper, Christine, Hal, Rosie
Part 1: Icebreaker, led by Lynn
Everyone brought an object that represented one of our passions.
--Liang loves delicious food and social networking. He is a big fan of TED TALKs.
--Jasper has a passion for taking notes in a notebook about anything he's interested in. He alternates using a white, and then a black notebook!
--Rosie has a passion for eating snacks, drinking coffee and collecting art sketches.
--Christine is passionate about her bank job and reading. She has worked in the same company for decades. She has devoted herself to her job. She's hoping her boss will see this blog!
--Hal brought his professional camera. He is into photography and told us about many things that he's experienced.
--Lynn feels she may be one of just a few people around who can say they maybe get TOO much exercise. She does 2 sets of stretching exercises every morning, and then cleans her floor. As long as it's not raining, she bicycles to work. She swims 3 times a week (for the last 35 years—it's her religion!) and always walks up and down the MRT escalators!
Part 2, led by Liang
Topic: HOW to ENCOURAGE MORE MEMBER PARTICIPATION in TIiA, using the Design for Change model of problem-solving
This was a continuation of our last session on 16 June.
First of all, he played a video “How to start a movementDerek Sivers” on the TED TALK webpage.

Discussion re: QuestionIf I’m a quiet person, is that good for TIiA or is TIiA a social group requiring more talkative people?
Answer:
We all have an important role to play in a small group. Everyone should have their role to play. For example Steve Wozniak is a quiet guy and quite a different character from Steve Jobs. He contributed to Apple in the way he was good at.
Actions taken:
We started a TIiA community Facebook page. It’ll be managed by Christine mainly; Liang and Rosie will assist her. Before future sessions, we’ll announce the topic and add the related link to the TIiA blog. After each session, we’ll post the Session Minutes and any photos taken at sessions.
The final To Do list:
1.Blog banner / create a TIiA logo.
2. Collect photos related to Taiwan. We’ll put photos on FB or blog and rotate them every once in a while .

All of us had fun. We finished at around 5:10pm, an hour beyond the normal finishing time!
NB: No donations taken at this session—Lynn forgot to pass around the red bag!

TAIWAN ISSUES in ACTION MINUTES by Louis
Saturday 11 August 2012
Time: 13:30-16:00
Venue: Christine Hsu's house, near Liuzhangli MRT station
Participants: Christine, Rosie, Hal, Joyce, Lynn (x2!), Catherine, Caroline,
Anne, Louis
Icebreaker: Led by Hal. Tell the group 3 things that are special about you.
Topic: Strengthening Employment and Entrepreneurship for Women in Taiwan
Guest Speaker: Bi-shia Sun, long-term (30 yrs +) Taiwanese govt Labor Dept staff
The situation which we are facing now is:
  1. Our women's labor force participation rate has risen since the 1980’s, but is still below other countries: the govt wants to improve it.
  2. The Roles of Women and Men in the family have changed.
  3. The women who quit Jobs at the marriageable age of 30 and want to return to work after their children grow up face difficulties finding suitable jobs.

Therefore, the Government is trying to help women find jobs or become an Entrepreneur through various strategies and programs. Detailed information is below.
Employment training programs http://www.evta.gov.tw/home/index.asp
Encourage entrepreneurship-business start-up Phoenix program

Discussion after Bi-shia's presentation
Most of us were pleasantly surprised at how well it seems the Government is dealing with this issue. We felt more people could be helped if they only knew about the programs. So, we started brainstorming how the Govt could let more citizens know about what it's doing:
--TV ads
--Facebook

Actions we can take to help:
--Pass along information to people we know who might be interested
Bi-shia gave us brochures. (Lynn to let Yvonne know; Anne to let a Taiwanese friend who makes jams and sauces know)

Other information
Here is introduction of南庄向天湖咖啡 on internet.

Announcements:
1. There's a Salvador Dali exhibit on at Chiang-Kai Shek Memorial Hall until sometime in Sept.
  1. There's an interesting-sounding FREE event on Fri 24 Aug 2012, 7-9pm, sponsored by Design for Change. A talk in English (with Chinese interpretation) by the Taiwanese architect who designed the Beitou library and a visiting British elementary school principal. They'll be talking about Education for Sustainability.
